Trekking in Nepal

Langtang Region

Making a trekking tour up the Langtang region is another of those finest mountain treks. Situated directly north of Kathmandu, this region has three relatively short yet interesting treks; Langtang, Helambu, and Gosainkunda (the sacred lake devoted to Lord Shiva). Langtang, at 3307m above sea level, extends from north of Helambu to all the way up to the Tibetan border. It is the largest village of the region despite its small size and thLangtang Villagee people are a mixture of Tamang, Sherpa and Bhotia. Its upper valley is a grazing paradise, rich in flowers and grass and dotted with stone huts used in the summer time for butter making.

This region is also renowned for fresh water lakes. These lakes and the stories of their mythical origin have enriched the Nepali legends and Nepali religious tradition. That is why the Hindus of all over the world go on a pilgrimage to these lakes during the full moon of August and pray homage to Lord Shiva, the god of universe and many other Hindu Gods. Being famous for religious and tourists point of views, these lakes are the destinations of both the romantic, sentimental, emotional and religious soul.

Moreover, this region presents a variety of possibilities regarding trekking tours. Since the altitudes and the accessibility to arrive at such altitudes are varied, you can start a trekking tour in this region quite down from low altitude and as per your interest, stamina, and corresponding capacity.

The trek to Helambu is one that remains open for the whole year. It is the most easily accessible of all the trekking regions. Helambu is below 3000m and creates few altitude problems. The Laurebinayak La and Ganja La Passes are among the most preferred Passes for the high altitude trekkers.

Extended from a low altitude of 2000m to high altitude of 7000m covering an area of 1710 sq km, the Langtang region is the second largest conserved National Park of Nepal enriched by more than 1000 different species of flora and at the same time it is the natural home of 150 different species of birds and many wild animals such as tiger, beer, deer, wild sheep, snow-leopard etc.
