An early start for your domestic flight to Lukla. Maybe enjoy a late ‘second’ breakfast in Lukla whilst watching the flights come and go from this unique mountain airstrip. Begin trekking, Lukla (2840m) – Monjo (2835m). Today is an easy 5 – 6hrs of trekking through the village of Phakding en route to Monjo where you will stay the night. BLD
Having cleared the entrance to the National Park on the outskirts of Monjo, it’s a steady hour following the river before you cross the final of 7 suspension bridges and begin the 90 min steep ascent up to Namche. This is the first of the ‘big’ hills so take it steady. You will catch your first glimpse of Mt Everest in the distance from a rest point. Namche Bazaar is by far the biggest village in the region with shops and even internet cafes. Expect to arrive at lunchtime. 4 hrs.
Day 5 is an Acclimatisation Day. Your Guide will take you out on a trek to a variety of places in the local region to gain some additional altitude and assist your body in its acclimatisation process. BLD
A beautiful day’s walk out of Namche, initially contouring for about 60 – 90 mins until you reach Kenjoma. Some groups stop here for coffee (you can see Tengbouche across the valley; you will descend through this village). Just around the corner, the route towards Gokyo splits from the EBC route. You will descend rapidly to Phortse Tenga before re-ascending for 2 – 2 1/2 hrs to your resting place of Dole. BLD
A short day (just 2 1/2 hrs) but due to the altitude, very necessary. Take your time and enjoy the relatively easy day. BLD
Day 8 is another short day at 3 1/2 hrs. You will ascend to Pangka (4548m), where the front end of the Ngozumpa glacier comes into view. Beyond here lies Gokyo, passing several very small lakes prior to the bigger ones. You will spend two nights here. If the energy is there after you have settled into your tea house in Gokyo and rested, you could trek further up the glacier towards the fourth and fifth lakes further north. Even fewer people go here and well worth the trip. BLD.
During your rest day, a side trip up to the Gokyo Ri is almost compulsory! The ‘orange’ glow you often see on photos of Mt Everest is taken at sunset (as opposed to sunrise) and often taken from Gokyo Ri. Take the rest of the day to relax and take in your superb surroundings; beautiful lakes, high mountains, and a glacier right next to you. This is a photographer’s dream with patience and good luck with the weather. BLD
A straightforward descent down the valley to the village of Dole. Approx 4hrs, BLD
A steep descent to the hamlet of Phortse Tenga before eventually re-joining the Everest trail back to Namche. Approx 5hrs, BLD
The final day’s trekking, back out of Namche, down the big hill to Monjo, and along to Phakding, probably for lunch. The final stretch is about 3 hrs back up to Lukla. The total trekking time is around 7 hrs, BLD
An early start to have breakfast and be ready for your flight back down to Kathmandu. You should reach your hotel by midday; plenty of time to enjoy the facilities that Thamel has to offer. You can continue with any sightseeing, have a post-trek massage (very inexpensive in Nepal), shop ‘till you drop, or simply relax in one of the many cafes, restaurants, and bars soaking up the atmosphere. BLD
Breakfast Service.
